GREAT MANGBETU IN TERRACOTTA - CONGO - DRC

In Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda... and as in many other African countries, it is women who are the potters. Men are responsible for extracting and transporting clay soil. Everything else is up to women. This pot exquisitely illustrates a Mangbetu art dedicated to the glorification of beauty.

In the first quarter of the 20th century, some artists - in the village of Niangara and at the court of King Okondo - started the tradition of anthropomorphic ceramics, which developed into one of the most sensitive art expressions: Mangbetu
