Kakudji - Kusu - DR Congo
Rare Kusu fetish from the end of the 19th, or the beginning of the 20th century, in good condition.<br>At the top of the skull, a receptacle hollowed out to receive offerings is covered with animal skin. On the skin, natural resin was poured.<br>On the face and body, in the places where the fetish was touched, a deep patina tending towards black and dark red.<br>Ritual crust is visible on the entire surface of the fetish.<br>Copper studs are present at the ears and on the forehead. Around the neck, a twisted copper necklace.<br>As a belt, braided plant fiber.<br>It should be noted a deep cavity inside its base due to the work of termites.<br>At the level of the left shoulder, a crack was repaired locally and filled with resin, as was often the case among ethnic groups, when the wood in the hands of the sculptors presented some imperfections. A female Baule sculpture, Ivory Coast, placed on an oval base, her waist is wrapped up in a red coverup, short arms, the two hands are touching her waist, her strong, slender torso is mounted by a thick ringed neck who carries a large rounded head, the features of the face are calm, relaxed, an opened mouth, rounded jaw, half closed eyes, the hairdo is pulled back in a stylish manner; the face, front and back of the body are covered with scarifications, sign of beauty and status in Baule culture; some wear throughout the sculpture, sign of use. A male Baule figure, Ivory Coast, placed on an oval base, straight legs, both hands touching the stomach, the torso is mounted by a thick cylindric neck who carries a large oval head, genitals hanging between the legs. The features are calm, relaxed, emphasized by the half closed eyes staring downwards, the hairdo is pulled back forming side buns. The figure is covered with scarifications on his neck - sign of beauty and status in Baule culture; some wear throughout the sculpture, sign of use.<br><br>“To articulate historians, the most consistent features of Baule art is a kind of peaceful containment. Faces tend to have downcast eyes and figures most often hold their ams against the body. […] Among their abundant art forms, the Baule people continue to place the greatest value on masks and figure sculptures, which remain the only sculptural art still widely used in Baule villages. A female Baule sculpture, Ivory Coast, collected in the region Ahara, standing on a fragmentary base, muscular legs ending in prominent buttocks, a slender torso with a pointed navel, small sagging breasts, narrow shoulders leading to fragil arms carved close to the body, small hands touching the abdomen, the torso is decorated with scarification marks, the cylindrical neck supporting an oval head, a straight mouth, a nose with broad nostrils, round eyes which are bordered all around, spherical ears set very high, further scarification marks on the face and the neck, a long braid hangs down to the back; clear traces of ritual use, an encrusted patina. A Baule maternity sculpture (mater lactans), Ivory Coast, seated on a two-legged stool, her left arm angled and touching her breast, with the right arm holding a drinking child, a second child is clinging on her back, rounded shoulders, a round head with a protruding mouth beneath a slender nose with broad tips, downcast round eyes, nearly circular ears, scarification marks all over the sculpture, the hairline braided, further braided strands in the striated hairstyle; a partly shiny brown surface, several age cracks, traces of age and ritual use.
